Learning Space Design Guidelines

UBC is updating its Learning Space Design Guidelines. 

The Learning Spaces Design Guidelines (LSDG) were developed in 2011 as a guide for the planning and design of learning spaces at UBC. The LSDG has been a valued asset for many years, providing project teams with a practical design document for reference. However, since its inception, pedagogy has evolved and development processes on campus have changed.  

The UBC Facilities Planning Learning Spaces Team is directing the update, which has 3 goals:

1.      Reduce the document volume by removing unnecessary text and/or sections already covered in other UBC documents and sites (e.g. Technical Guidelines, AV Guidelines).

2.      Reformat the document to include additional colour, diagrams, images and a more checklist oriented format.

3.      Review and update content, terminology and definitions as appropriate.

The Learning Spaces Design Guidelines are used in the development of new classrooms as well as renovations and upgrades of existing learning spaces. Design is guided by employing 6 key principles— Interaction, Technology, Environment, Flexibility, Location and Accessibility.  These cover all aspects of learning spaces, from room types and furniture to instructional technology.  

UBC Okanagan was approached to see if they were interested in adopting the guidelines for their learning space projects. Campus specific detail was added, where necessary.  

The Learning Spaces Design Guidelines aim to minimize design and construction problems that may negatively affect learning spaces. The document highlights different types of learning spaces and important considerations for creating successful spaces.
